Workplace Health and Safety (WHS; sometimes called Occupational Health and Safety) is a set of tools that a business uses to protect its workers from risks and dangers that their work can entail.
Since different workplaces can involve very different risks and hazards – an open cut mine in the Pilbara is a very different working environment from a HR consultancy in Balmain! – the work of WHS professionals can be extremely varied; what remains constant is your commitment to the highest possible standards. The tools of your trade will be your knowledge of the codes of practice, your expert interpersonal skills, and your ability to recognise risk and act to prevent it, sometimes in high pressure, fast paced environments.
Depending on where you work, you could be doing induction and training for new employees, performing risk assessments, site surveys and operational oversight, and consulting with senior management on the maintenance and improvement of risk minimization and hazard prevention programs.
Work Health and Safety affects every business, in every industry, and expertise is valued at every level. From airlines and banks to private manufacturers large and small, WHS professionals remain in demand for both short contracts and permanent roles.
Plenty. Depending on the industry, an entry level role will earn around $50,000 a year, but experienced senior WHS managers in high risk industries like resources or aviation can earn upwards of $170,000. Real workplace experience is extremely valuable, so the sooner you can start getting your foot into some short contracts – for which you’ll need to be qualified – the sooner you can be earning.
