Incentives and Funding Available

The Australian Government is committed to supporting the development of skills labour across the country. They provide a range of financial incentives and benefits to employers and Australian Apprentices/Trainees.

Incentives when putting a Trainee on with GTI include:

  • A hiring incentive to employers who bring on a new employee and register them onto any of our Traineeships (except civil), of up to $1,750, paid in two instalments at six and 12 months after commencement, up to a maximum value of $3,500.
  •  A wage subsidy to employers of Trainees in Civil Construction, set at 10% of their wage in the first year, 10% in the second year, up to $1500 per quarter, up to $6000 per year.
  • A direct payment to Trainees in our Civil Construction Courses, of up to $1,250 paid every six months for a maximum of two years, up to a total value of $5,000.

How do Traineeships work?

Here are some of the general rules, make sure you check the state specific requirements for any unique requirements in your state.

To be eligible for Traineeship payments, your employee must be:

  • an Australian citizen; or
  • a foreign national with permanent residency status; or
  • a New Zealand passport holder who has resided in Australia for at least six months

The employee can be full-time or part-time but cannot be any of the following:

Employed as a casual or contractor
Sole director of the employer company
Sole trader
Majority shareholder in the employer company
Partner in a Partnership (when the partnership is the employer)
Trustee of a trust (when the trust is the employer)

New Worker:

To be eligible for the ‘New Worker’ Traineeship: an employee who has been employed for:

– less than 3 months full time
– less than 12 months part time
– has been upgraded from part time to full time or casual to part or full time*
– has been upgraded from casual to part or full time*

(*check with AASN as to eligibility based on overall length of employment)
